
A retired Bell Labs employee in New Jersey has been awarded the Nobel Prize in physics. George Smith and a co-worker (Willard S. Boyle) inventedĀ the digital eye known as the charge coupled device (CCD) in 1969. The device transforms light into the electric signals that become digital images.
